Right in the heart of Mumbai, minutes away from the noisy comforts of daily life, is the Dadar Parsi Colony, a leafy haven that transports you to another age. Described by tripoto.com as “one of the quietest places in Bombay’, it is also sometimes referred to as ‘Five Gardens’ – though, in reality, it has a total of 14 of them!

Built in the 1920s, the Dadar Parsi Colony is in the Dadar-Matunga-Wadala region and is the only ungated Parsi community in the city. This area, created by Mancherji Edalji Joshi, is one of Bombay’s first planned settlements, built to expand the city during the Black Death plague. Constructed along open-plan norms, it features low buildings surrounding five gardens, connected by narrow, well-paved intertwining roads. 

In a city that is growing rapidly, the upper-class Dadar Parsi Colony holds its own as a quaint locality, exuding old-world charm and the culture of a bygone era. Joshi, who was working under the British for the ‘Improvement Trust’, as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) was then called, was particular about open green areas that offered shade and respite, in addition to attracting birds.

Magicbricks notes that Parsi Colony is well connected via Eastern Express Highway, Lady Jehangir Road, Tilak Road and G D Ambedkar Road, providing smooth connectivity to various parts of the city. Dadar Railway Station is just one km. away, while Wadala Road Railway Station is at a distance of 2 km. The Dadar East Station of the Mumbai Monorail is also just a km. away. 

Tucked away into its private spaces as it might seem, Dadar Parsi Colony has access to excellent social infrastructure, including schools, medical facilities and retail options. If schools are what you need, then some options include Masoom, The J B Vachha High School, St. Joseph’s High School and Dadar Parsee Youths Assembly High School, all within two km. Medical care is available at the Mumbai Port Trust Hospital, T A T A Memorial Hospital, King Edward Memorial Hospital and Sanjeevanee Hospital. You will also find a plethora of shopping centres, such as Broadway Shopping Centre and Dadrauli – not to mention all the close proximity to the buzzing Dadar shopping district. 

But how can we talk about the Dadar Parsi Colony without mentioning the amazing array of trees in the vicinity! Katie Bagli, a well-known author of children’s books, a naturalist and herself a resident of the area, worked with GreenLine to map and document the trees of the area along with schoolchildren in the neighbourhood. The result was a beautiful book called Trees of Dadar Parsi Colony, a GreenLine initiative. Replete with gorgeous photographs, it highlights a host of stunning trees and flowers, including the Casuarina, Mahogany, Mast Tree, Mulberry, Neem, Peepal Tamarind, Star Apple and many more. “Nothing is holier, nothing is more exemplary than a beautiful, strong tree,” says the German-Swiss poet Herman Hesse, quoted in the book.

Few people in the city are privileged enough to live in this charming and genteel locality.
